Remo williams the adventure begins11/30/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With Kate Mulgrew, Wilford Brimley (as the cuddly chief of the president’s personal assassination bureau), and George Coe (1985). Guy Hamilton directs in a mildly farcical, superficial manner that drowns out the rather interesting sociopathic male fantasies buried in the source material. Ward, a gruff, amiable presence, has the stuff of an appealing blue-collar hero, but he hasn’t got a chance with the feeble setup the filmmakers have given him: he’s made the butt of meathead jokes for 60 minutes (as he tries to cope with the rigors of Chiun’s training) and then plopped down in the middle of a slipshod intrigue, where his success has more to do with luck than any of the skills he has supposedly mastered. Joel Grey costars as Chiun, an elderly Korean who teaches Williams the secret ways of the oriental martial arts. Richard Sapir and Warren Murphy’s paperback hero, “the Destroyer,” comes to the screen as played by Fred Ward, he’s a former New York cop who has been recruited by a secret government agency to execute big-time criminals who’ve eluded the law.
